Church organisations possess extensive property portfolios, many of which have developed over time, and which are increasingly facing pressure to adapt in a dynamic social, economic and regulatory environment. To address these challenges professionally, sound expertise is required in the strategic management, development and utilisation of these portfolios.
The aim of the programme is to support church decision-makers and specialists in designing property projects that are legally compliant, economically viable and forward-looking. Through a focused curriculum and the integration of current market trends – from the transformation of sacred spaces to sustainable project development – participants learn to systematically identify potential uses within existing portfolios, assess risks, and reconcile the specific values of church work with the principles of economic efficiency and socio-ecological sustainability.

The part-time programme runs for seven months and is divided into three compact modules to ensure it fits seamlessly with participants’ working lives. As part of an ongoing process of format optimisation, the programme combines ten days of face-to-face teaching with flexible digital sessions, comprising eight half-day online lectures and supplementary webcasts. This efficient structure enables intensive knowledge transfer whilst minimising time away from the workplace. There is now a greater focus on interactive workshops and in-depth case studies (e.g. on transformation processes) to make the transfer into church practice even more effective. The programme corresponds to 14 ECTS credits in terms of content and scope.
In addition to attendance time, students must allow time for preparing for the examination. Working in groups of three to four, participants simulate a project before a jury, which they select independently from their own property portfolio based on individual parameters. The emphasis here is on the practical development of strategies to manage church property portfolios in a holistic, sustainable and economically viable manner, taking into account modern repurposing concepts.

Whether educational leave can be applied for depends on two factors: Firstly, a Vocational Training Act must be in force in the federal state in which one's employer operates. Secondly, the continuing education provider must be recognised according to the criteria of the federal state.
Since Bavaria does not have a vocational training act, employees from this federal state cannot apply for educational leave. Interested workers from NRWBerlin or Hamburg, on the other hand, are generally entitled to ten days of educational leave within two years, which the employer can grant on application under certain circumstances. If you would like to know whether you can apply for educational leave and what steps you need to take, please contact our study manager Katja Bobber.
